Manchester

Manchester has a population of around 500,000 people and is a city of Greater Manchester. Greater Manchester has a population of around 2,500,000, making it the second-most-populous in the UK.

Manchester is located in the North West of England and is inhabited by ‘Mancunians’.

Manchester Universities

Manchester has two main universities, Manchester University and Manchester Metropolitan University

The university of Manchester comprises 300 building spread over 299 acres. The unual income for the university is £755 million. The University states that it has 23 Nobel Prize winners amongst its current and former staff and students. Manchester University made huge investments in new buildings and facilities in 2009/10.

Manchester Metropolitan University are the 3rd most popular University in the United Kingdom, receiving over 48,000 applications per year according to their website.

Manchester night-life

Manchester has a thriving night-life worth around 100,000,000 per annum. Over 110,000 people go out in Manchester on both Friday and Saturday nights. Manchester is has a number of distinct areas which contain pubs and clubs. These include

  • The Printworks, containing Pure Manchester, Opus Manchester and Tiger Tiger.
  • The Northern Quarter is next to both the Manchester Arndale Centre and Piccadilly Gardens and is the home to some of Manchester’s best independent bars and traditional pubs including the Bay Horse, TV21, Bluu and The Black Dog Ballroom.

Manchester transport

Manchester has excellent transport links both internally in Manchester and to other places in the UK. Manchester operates trams which provide transport around the centre of Manchester and buses which provide transport accorss the rest of Manchester.

Manchester Airport is one of the largest airports in the UK.

The heart of Manchester is served by three railway stations – Manchester Picadilly, Oxford Road and Victoria.

Manchester Music

The Manchester music scene has produced many great bands which have gone on to international success. These include The Smiths, the Buzzcocks, Oasis, Doves and Ten.
Manchester’s main pop music venue is the Manchester Evening News Arena, situated next to Victoria station. The venue seats over 21,000, and is the largest arena of its type in Europe.
Manchester boasts a top-class classical concert venue – The Bridge Water Hall, which was designed and built with excellent acoustics and striking design in mind.

Sport in Manchester

Manchester is home to the one of the biggest football clubs in the world, Manchester United FC as well as the famous Manchester City FC.

In 2002 Manchester hosted the commonwealth games.
